BP Oil Spill Warfare in the Gulf of Mexico—Vast National Damage

June 12, 2010 (LPAC)—The Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill, and the continuation of BP-Obama inaction and prevarication, constitute a "warfare-like intention by the British Empire against the United States," said Lyndon LaRouche on June 8. LaRouche's political action committee is leading the drive for expropriating BP America Inc., and launching emergency measures to deal with the the BP out-of-control deepwater well, to wage a military-style clean-up, and conduct full-scale rebuilding of the Gulf and U.S. economy. President Obama must resign, or be impeached.

The extent of the damage toll from BP warfare is indicated by a few features of the region, given below, and updates from officials in the Gulf states. The economic activity centered on the Gulf of Mexico is vital to the United States and to the Americas, despite the terrible economic degradation which this region has suffered in recent decades, under globalization by the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Caribbean Free Trade Zone, and related London-serving policies.

Ports, Transportation

The Port of South Louisiana (New Orleans) and Port of Houston are the two U.S. seaports which rank among the top 15 in the world, ranking 13th and 10th respectively in terms of tonnage of total cargo handled. Besides bulk oil and refined petroleum product going through these two Gulf ports, South Louisiana-Port of New Orleans is the transit zone for handling most of the bulk and water-borne manufactured product of the entire Mississippi-Missouri-Ohio River Basin—wheat, corn, soybeans, fertilizer, coal, aggregate, and many other commodities.

But now, the communities in South Louisiana—involving 2 million people who support port activities, as well as all else, from chemical processing, to fishing to tourism—are being completely undermined.

The port facilities themselves are physically jeopardized, along with general impact, by destruction of the working wetlands that constitute protection from storm surges.

On June 10, Mark A. Cooper, Director of the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, stressed to a Congressional hearing "the potential rerouting of marine vessels that will impact the transportation and logistics industry" in New Orleans, if the do-nothing response continues. His testimony:

"While water transportation directly constitutes about .6% of gross state product, this sector and the related port activities are essential to petroleum and coal products manufacturing, fertilizer and substantial chemical manufacturing. Oil intrusion into the Mississippi River and intercoastal waterways will have an enormous economic impact beyond the mere income derived from the transportation sector. Ports up and down the Mississippi River and across the Gulf Coast will be dramatically affected, as will the labor that supports those ports and the indirect services that support the business sector."

Fisheries

Gulf fisheries have ranked among the most productive in the world. In 2008, the commercial fish and shellfish harvest for the United States amounted to 1.3 billion pounds, from the five Gulf states. The Gulf of Mexico has four of the top seven fishing ports in the United States, by weight.

The Gulf area as a whole accounted for 73%—188.8 million pounds—of the U.S. national shrimp landings in 2008. The Gulf area accounted for close to 60%—20.6 million pounds—of all domestically supplied oyster meat in the United States in 2008. This capacity is now being destroyed.

Cooper testified on the BP oil spill threat to fisheries: "One of the most acutely affected sectors is commercial fishing. Louisiana's offshore waters supply nearly one-third of all commercial seafood harvested in the lower 48 states, with values in excess of $2.85 billion annually. As the largest provider of domestic seafood in the continental United States, protection of Louisiana's fisheries, habitats and catch are critical to our nation's economy and food supply." But the destruction has begun.

"With the normal shrimping season virtually at a standstill in many offshore areas of the state due to closures, only an estimated 15% to 20% of shrimpers are able to actively harvest, resulting in a dramatically decreased supply of local shrimp to processors.

"Due to closures directly related to the oil spill, processors are now experiencing a decrease in local product which is necessary to supply long term demands. If the inability to supply this long term demand continues, it will cause a widespread relocation of components of the supply chain that have built up over generations."

Americas Ecosystems

The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth-largest body of water in the world, and sometimes called, the "Mediterranean of the Americas." It borders five U.S. states, five Mexican states, and the island of Cuba to the southeast. Its habitats include coastal wetlands, submerged vegetation, and all kinds of marine offshore systems.

The Louisiana coastline—with the extensive Mississippi Delta and intercoastal features—is the principal nursery ground for marine life for the entire Gulf of Mexico.

The Louisiana coastline provides the wildlife habitat for the second largest bird flyway in the United States—the Mississippi Flyway, which involves international migration of all kinds of waterfowl.

All of this is now in jeopardy.

Crisis in the Gulf of Mexico Part III

June 12, 2010 -- What we have demonstrated in this series is the criminal negligence and imperial structure of BP. A whole other aspect of this situation is what has been reawakened in the American people. In the aftermath of the BP oil catastrophe, Americans have responded with a hatred of the British imperial interests and anger at the now obvious role of Obama as a British agent.

Rahm Emanuel's Ties to BP, Add To His Growing Problems

June 11, 2010 (LPAC)—White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's ties to British Petroleum have now added to his problems and those of Barack Obama. While the Obama administration's subservience to BP is not explained by Emanuel's ties, the ties are nonetheless coherent with an administration that does the bidding of the British Empire, despite the recent spate of method-acting expressions of anger.

As reported by Los Angeles Times blogger Andrew Malcolm, while he was a Congressman, Rahm Emanuel lived rent-free for five years in Washington, D.C. in an apartment owned by Rep. Rosa Delauro and her husband, Stanley Greenberg. Greenberg's consulting firm is the one which worked for BP on repositioning itself as a "green" corporation. Specifically Greenberg's firm, Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, was a prime architect of BP's recent rebranding drive as a green petroleum company, down to green signs and the slogan "Beyond Petroleum."

Greenberg and Emanuel are longstanding friends. It was Greenberg who brought Emanuel on to Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign. Emanuel performed the marriage ceremony for Greenberg's daughter Anna.

Greenberg is chairman and CEO of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, a premium research and strategic consulting firm. According to its website, the firm helped BP plan and evaluate its successful re-branding campaign, focusing the company's branding on energy solutions, including the development of solar and other renewable energy sources. BP's Beyond Petroleum rebranding campaign began after it merged with Amoco in 2000. Greenberg's other clients include United Healthcare, Monsanto, former British prime minister Tony Blair, and many environmental organizations.

In the 2008 election, BP employees donated about $70,000 to Obama. The center for Responsive Politics confirms that the $71,051 that Obama received during the 2008 election cycle was entirely from BP employees. BP's PAC contributed $1,000 to Obama's US Senate campaign in 2004. Prior to 2008 Obama received a total of $6,000 in contributions from BP's PAC and BP employees.

BP's corporate headquarters in the United States is in Chicago.

One wonders what Rahm Emanuel's obligations as a U.S. Congressmen were to report free rent for 5 years and whether he met those obligations.

Senators head to Gulf as oil disaster estimates double

A delegation of U.S. senators head to the heart of coastal Louisiana on Friday to assess the damage caused by the growing BP oil disaster.

The visit comes as researchers have doubled estimates of how much oil has been spewing from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico, reporting Thursday that up to 40,000 barrels, or 1.7 million gallons, a day may have escaped for weeks.

The four lawmakers, Sens. Benjamin Cardin, David Vitter, Jeff Merkley and Barbara Mikulski, will be in Grand Isle, Louisiana, one of the early areas hit by the slick created by the underwater gusher.

Local politicians are expressing outrage over how the White House and oil giant are handling the disaster response.

The senators are the latest in a virtual parade of Washington officials to make the trip to the Gulf Coast. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis was in the region Thursday, while President Obama is scheduled to make his fourth trip to the region next week.

LaRouche: BP Actions In Gulf Are An Act of War Against the United States

June 10, 2010 (LPAC)—"There is no question that the continuation of this problem in the Gulf, is expressly the warfare-like intention of the British Empire against the United States," charged Lyndon LaRouche on June 8. LaRouche was referring to the utter failure of British Petroleum to deal seriously with the consequences of its own murderous negligence in the case of the Deepwater Horizon drilling station—including its ongoing lies about the size of the leakage, as well as its failure to mobilize anywhere near the resources required to mitigate the damage.

The British are effectively carrying out warfare against the United States, LaRouche said. In addition, "the President is a complicit traitor to the United States in this war."

Obama's traitorous behavior is demonstrated, first and foremost, by the fact that he has left the handling of the crisis in the hands of the British imperial company, refusing to exercise the sovereign powers of the United States government to expropriate them, and to take over the operations to save the United States population from further devastation of their livelihood.

Thus, by his failure to act, Obama has left the British criminal in charge of the crime scene, and subjected the American people to more destruction. Like the British agent he is, the President refuses to defend the United States against British depradations.

"Remember, BP is the personal asset of the British monarchy," LaRouche added. "It's an imperial, Anglo-Dutch imperial entity." It is carrying out "a sabotage operation against the economy and people of the United States."

The conclusion is clear: "This President must go, and must go now! He's unfit to be President, and those in elected office who support him, are not fit to be members of our government. They should git 'n scat, right now!"

LaRouche: Only Solution to the Crisis, For Europe and the World, Begins With U.S. Restoration of Glass-Steagall

June 8, 2010 (LPAC) —Lyndon LaRouche issued the following statement on the solution to the global financial crisis today.

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that austerity measures are necessary at this juncture. If so, that is an understandable mistake by her. This suggests that the root of her mistaken policy would be her intention to 'work within the existing system,' without considering those reforms in the system without which the already approaching early doom of Europe under the existing system were virtually inevitable.

"The only solution is to be premised on the immediate alternative of the combination of a predominantly global installation of a multi-national fixed-exchange-rate form of Glass-Steagall-modeled international credit system, as a sudden replacement for the existing monetarist systems.

"As I reported on an occasion last evening, this requires the immediate ousting of the current U.S.A. President Obama, who is presently, and completely, a self-doomed British puppet, and the U.S. adoption of both a Glass-Steagall system and a commitment to immediate resumption of a fixed-exchange-rate system. This reform must be made as a credit system, rather than continuing with a monetarist system.

"It is essential that the U.S.A. accompany its own U.S,A. reform by the announcement of its commitment to professing immediate extension of membership to both a Glass-Steagall system and a fixed-exchange-rate credit system to willing European and other nations.

"It must be recognized that there are presently two financial systems operating as one. On the one side, there has been an accelerated collapse of purchasing power for matters of the real economy, at the same time that there is an implicitly hyperinflationary expansion of purely fictitious forms of monetary emission.

"Thus, throwing the fictitious mass of derivatives and their like overboard will not shrink the real economy, but, rather, quite the contrary, allow for the immediate massive creation of credit for restarting and expanding the real economy, a mass of state-created credit, run, to a large extent, through a protected system of commercial banking, and a physical-economic stimulus for the entire economy prompted by state-generated large-scale habilitation of basic economic infrastructure. The appropriate forms of infrastructure will inevitably create a market for credit productively employed in agriculture, manufacturing, and functionally related production categories. This will, in turn, provide for a natural and rapid re-expansion of tax-revenue base of nations."

Calls for CCC Program For Gulf of Mexico, and Haiti, Too

June 8, 2010 (LPAC)—Former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich has followed up his proposal for putting BP into receivership, with a call for creating a Roosevelt-style CCC program to put unemployed American youth to work cleaning BP's damage in the Gulf of Mexico. As he put it in a June 6 entry on his blog:

"Friday's job report was awful. For most new high school and college grads finding a job is harder than ever. Meanwhile, states are cutting summer jobs for disadvantaged young people. What to do with this army of young unemployed? Send them to the Gulf to clean up beaches and wetlands, and send the bill to BP...

"Most of the oil hasn't hit land yet. When it does, hundreds of thousands of workers will be needed to clean beaches, siphon off oil from wetlands, and rescue stranded wildlife. Tens of thousands more will have to bring in new landfill, replace tarred sea walls, and rebuild shoreline infrastructure.

"Yet we've got hundreds of thousands of young people sitting on their hands right now because they can't find jobs.... The President should order BP to establish a $5 billion clean-up fund, and immediately put America's army of unemployed young people to work saving the Gulf coast. Call it the new Civilian Conservation Corps."

There are Republicans who would support such a CCC-style mobilization. A Republican Congressman from California, Rep. Gary Miller, introduced a bill at the end of April for the creation of a similar style U.S. program to aid the reconstruction in Haiti. Miller's proposed "'Partnership With America' Rapid Rebuilding of Haiti Act of 2010" does not cite the CCC, but the gist is the same, and coheres with Lyndon LaRouche's call for mobilizing a CCC program to save Haiti, and give a mission to U.S. youth, too.

HR 5171 would "create a program under which ... U.S. construction and reconstruction experts and workers who currently are unemployed or significantly underemployed shall begin work in Haiti on an organized and coordinated plan to help Haitians rebuild the infrastructure of Haiti, including roads, airports, energy facilities, schools, hospitals, and other services fundamental to economic development, including permanent housing for persons who lost their housing because of the earthquake."

Respectful of Haiti's sovereignty, the short bill calls for a plan to be developed "anticipating the needs of a Haitian economy that does not merely return to pre-earthquake levels but grows fast enough to provide jobs for Haitians and raise the overall standard of living in that country;" and "seek to ensure that the U.S. workers do not take the place of Haitian workers, but instead supplement, coordinate, and mentor Haitian construction workers, and train them so that an adequate and adequately trained Haitian construction force is left in place to accommodate the hoped-for future growth of the Haitian economy."
